Outline:
Leading telecoms operators working in Africa have pledged to reduce their CO2 emissions. The Vodafone Group has said, for example, that it would cut its emissions per network node in emerging markets by 20% by 2015 (from the 2010/11 baseline). The main approach to be used is renewable energy, and this case study therefore looks at the use of renewable energy sources (mainly solar and wind energy) to power base stations in rural areas as an alternative to diesel generators. It uses examples of African mobile operators that have already successfully deployed such solutions on their networks.
